GPA or average grade on a CV: when to show it

An average grade on a CV is worth a line if it is a magnet or the ad asks for it. A 5.4/10 convinces no one; an 8.7 in a technical degree can help a junior. People searching this are usually in internships, a first job, or a master. After three years on contract, the transcript is secondary: outcomes weigh more. Do not clone a “how to write a CV” guide: decide whether the number you already have deserves a line.

In Spain, /10 is understood. Abroad, state the scale: “8.2/10 (notable)”. A US GPA is not 1:1; do not eyeball a 7.1 into a 3.5. Sisters: first job, internship CV, no experience.

When to include it (and how)

Internships, scholarships, graduate programmes, consultancies that filter on grades, or an ad that says “minimum 7”. Put it next to the degree, not in a graphic badge: BSc Physics, UAM, 2024 — average 8.4/10. If only one course was excellent, do not fake an average: “thesis 9.5/10” is more honest.

• Useful bar in Spain: the line is usually worth it from ~7.5–8, unless they asked another number.
• Honours or a prize: one sentence, not a crest.
• Vocational training: a high grade still counts; do not hide it because it is not university.
• Postgrad: the master average if it is recent and the bachelor is not.

When to remove it

A mediocre average, a decade-old degree plus a senior career, or a number you cannot prove if they ask for the certificate. Do not list every module mark. ATS does not score “statistics 6”. If education is a wall, cut it: see length and improve the CV you already have.
